and Poppy
Like most people, I had always thought of rabbits as cute and cuddly critters that lived in hutches in the backyard. I had no clue as to their true nature until I actually shared my life with them. They are tremendously expressive, playful, and curious. And yet, each is a unique individual. You have never seen an animal expressing sheer joy until you've seen a rabbit explosively running and jumping around solely for happiness sake. One cannot help but smile, as their joy is truly contagious. Rabbits have an amazing capacity for love and affection, and have taught me much about trust, forgiveness, and determination of the spirit. Each day they remind me of what is important: spending time with loved ones, living in the moment, making the best of difficult situations, making time for play, enjoying a good snack and a gentle caress, communicating your opinions, and being true to oneself. The most important lesson of all: rabbit royalty should always reign over its human subjects from a comfortable bed in a safe and warm kingdom indoors, as a cherished and beloved member of the family. -- Cynthia
Gunther
The first time I ever met Gunther, he looked me in the eyes and commanded my heart. It was like a spell had been cast. He's done it with others as well. I've watched it happen. He does it with his eyes. They are an open door, an invitation to share in the purity of his being. I also know a secret about Gunther. He was supposed to be a police dog, but was too kind and too sensitive for the job. Perhaps a disappointment at the police academy, but really a greater gift to us all just as he is. -- sfn
Annie
Annie entered my life when she was approximately seven years old. She brought her baggage and I brought mine. Within hours we were forming a bond that has grown stronger each day and will remain with both of us forever. She makes me aware that nothing is more important than trust, kindness, and devotion. -- Joel
For over 13 years, Bailey has enhanced my life with her endless unconditional love and devoted companionship. Bailey's big beautiful brown soulful eyes fills my heart daily with warmth, comfort, peace and extreme joy. My life with Bailey has enriched my soul that will be everlasting. -- Joyce
Booda's story is one of confidence, pride, and self love.
Booda has always loved an audience, even when he was just a 9 week old puppy. As soon as he realizes that he is being watched, he will instantly switch from a casual walk to a nose high, chest out, shoulders back, high-stepping prance. No question of self worth here. Just a proud 20 pound ball of wrinkles who thinks he is something special and the whole world should know how great he is. -- Cathy and Tom
All Creatures Great and Small
Size does not limit character. Stormy was so named because he was found wondering about in a New England snowstorm. He has an unbelievable zest for life and sense of adventure. He eats till his crop is visibly distended; swaggers amongst dogs and humans; and is continually investigating, probing, testing, and most certainly daring each day to give him all it has to offer. -- sfn
don't ride in the back seat
We're not sure about Nikki's past. She was adopted from a shelter as an adult after being found in the woods with an injured leg. Whatever her past and despite permanent nerve damage in her leg, Nikki holds no grudges and she has defined her expectations as a dog princess expertly. -- Mary Ann and Peter
Vern
Vern entered our lives as a 17 year old cat with compromised kidneys and a huge infected hole in his neck. Yet, he had an undeniable interest in living. There was some concern that the younger cats at his new home might challenge and overwhelm the aged and recuperating Vern. For several weeks beforehand, Vern's bedding and blankets were presented to the other cats so they might become familiar with his scent. A rehabilitative therapist worked with Vern to build up his muscle mass and increase his stamina.
As it happened, Vern had no intention of being the retired feline in his new environment. To his final days, many months later, the leathery veteran insisted on commanding the pride. In the end, we are honored to have supported Vern's determination, dignity, and tenacity to life. -- Marie, Stephen, and sfn
A Corgi Rules My Life
I joke about being a slave to a dog prince, but Nalu reminds me about the important things in life: forming an opinion and communicating it effectively; choosing friends carefully; being just a little self-centered; enjoying good food, good friends, good weather, and good life. -- sfn
As I present these animals, I realize that while they are all special, none are extraordinary. Don't get me wrong; my point is that ALL life is special. If we take time to look, listen, and feel, any animal can broaden our horizons and make us better human beings.
