Veterinary Services for Birds

I have lived with birds for more than three decades. I knew even before going to veterinary school that they would be a part of my practice because there were so few veterinarians who knew anything about birds. I did my externships at clinics that cared for bird patients, both pet birds and wild birds. I spent ten years at an avian specialty practice in New England before returning to Hawaii in 2004.

I brought the knowledge, skills, and experience with me, but not the desire to build and manage a veterinary hospital and staff. So I do what I can with what I have to work with and here's what it amounts to:

  • I mostly work as a house-call veterinarian. I do not have a office or a hospital.

  • Services that can be done in a home setting:
    • Patient evaluations
    • "Spiffing"
      • Nail trim
      • Wing trim
      • Beak shaping
    • Nutritional and diet consultations.
    • Collecting specimens for laboratory diagnostics

  • Several local dog and cat veterinary practices graciously allow me to use their x-ray and anesthesia equipment. These procedures do need to be scheduled in advance.

  • Given the present lack of (emergency) care options for birds on the island, particularly on the Kona side, I accommodate as many urgent and critical care bird cases as I can. These patients are accommodated in the "birdie guest nest" attached to my home.
