Be Aware of Poisonous Toads in Hawaii
Bufo marinus toads have venomous glands on the sides of their heads. The venom can kill a dog. Most commonly dogs are poisoned when they catch the toads in their mouths. Dogs have also been poisoned via eggs or venom left in outdoor water bowls or ponds.
Prevention is aimed at minimizing sites that attract toads, namely standing water.
If you do see your dog catch a toad, immediately rinse his or her mouth with lots and lots of water (as with a garden hose). Do not let the pet drink the water. The poison affects heart rate and contractility. Contact your veterinarian.
