Other traumatic events to avoid

Trucks are common in Hawaii. Severe road rash resulting from animals dragged behind moving trucks is more common than you might imagine. Dogs who must ride in the back of trucks should ride in a kennel or should wear safety belts anchored such that none of the dog's feet can reach over any edge of the truck's bed.

BDLD is an acronym used in veterinary emergency hospitals that stands for "big dog little dog." Little dogs attacked by big dogs occurs frequently enough that it has earned itself an acronym. Typically the little dog is picked up and shaken. Injuries are sometimes serious and fatal. Yes, all dogs should learn good manners and all people should be responsible about their dog's actions -- little dogs should not tease big dogs; big dogs should not attack little dogs. In the real world however, which definitely includes Hawaii, there is a broad range of values towards animals and those of us with little dogs should be prepared to pick them up and protect them from harm.

As with any reference, these pages are not a substitute for veterinary care. Veterinary practice is an eyes, ears, nose, and hands-on profession which cannot be accomplished over the Internet.
